The Community Service Society (CSS), at 160 years old, is one of New York City’s oldest not-for-profit agencies and a recognized research, policy and direct service organization focused on poverty. The organization has been at the forefront of important innovations and events in meeting the needs of the poor; including establishing the prototype for the free school lunch program, founding the Columbia University School of Social Work, establishing the first model tenement, aiding victims of the Titanic disaster and the September 11, 2001 World Trade Center attack, registering unprecedented numbers of Black and Latino voters, and launching a citywide legislative redistricting campaign for the New York City Council that resulted in the election of a record number of council members of color.
Today led by David R. Jones, the organization’s first African-American President and CEO, CSS has taken a lead role in examining issues affecting the city’s growing Black and Latino majority. Most recently CSS issues reports detailing the extent of joblessness among Black men in New York City and the degree to which young Black and Latino youth are “disconnected” or severed from the labor market in the city. The organization also conducts an annual survey detailing the opinions of low-income New Yorkers on a range of issues. CSS is the co-convener of the New York/New Jersey State of the African American Male initiative.
