The success of the State of the African American Male (SAAM) initiative is contingent upon successful collaboration with organizations, businesses and individuals concerned with conditions confronting Black men in the New York metropolitan region, and committed to their full participation in civic life. New York/New Jersey SAAM seeks to work with parties that can make a positive contribution toward the uplift of Black men.
We seek to collaborate with community-based organizations, faith-based groups, educational institutions, and not-for-profit agencies that have an interest in resolving some of the longstanding barriers to economic opportunity for Black men. Our aim is to bring together resources that have always existed within our community but heretofore were not targeted in a strategic fashion; causing many missed opportunities to resolve some issues. At a minimum, we want to make Black men more aware of the myriad of resources at their disposal through the vast network of organizations that serve our community.
SAAM also encourages corporate and small business sponsors, companies that are committed to increasing employment, career and procurement opportunities for Black men. We also intend to enlist the active participation of Black male employees within the private sector to lend their time, energy and considerable expertise to the programmatic efforts of SAAM member organizations.
Our outreach will include an appeal to the philanthropic sector for their financial support. Too many organizations working on behalf of Black men are cash-strapped, often operating on a shoestring despite the value they bring to our community. We believe the foundation sector – private and corporate – has a responsibility to support these efforts in accordance with the special status conferred upon them by the government for their charitable missions.
